There is a Great Day Coming!

Sermon for Sunday, December 10, 2017

There is a Great Day Coming!

The day of our death as well as the great day of judgment is uncertain.

Hebrews 9:27; Matthew 10:28

Acts 10:

[42] He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.

Acts 17:

[31] For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed.

Ecclesiastes 12:

[13] Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

[14] For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

It will be a glad day for those who are ready and a sad day for  those who are not.

1) The greatest crowd ever assembled.

Matthew 25:

[31] When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.

[32] All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  [33] He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

All who have ever lived will be there.  You and your family will be there.  All in this church building today will be there.

2 Corinthians 5:

[10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

2) The greatest judge will preside.

John 12:

[48] There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.

2 Timothy 4:

[8] Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Many things influence decisions in our courts, but this will not be so at the great Judgment Day.  Everyone will stand on his or her own record (2 Corinthians 5:10).

3) The greatest books will be opened.

Revelation 20:

[12] And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.  Another book was opened, which is the book of life.  The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

[13] The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.

[14] Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.  The lake of fire is the second death.

[15] If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

John 12:48  … that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.

Matthew 24:35  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The book of life and the Bible are the greatest books.  The Bible is a great book because it contains God’s word to humankind.

John 17:17

4) The greatest separation will occur.

Matthew 25:

[32] All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  [33] He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Verse 41  Then he will say to those on his left, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

Where will you be?  There will be a father on one side and a mother on the other; a brother on one side and a sister on the other; a wife on one side and the husband on the other.  All could stand together with the lord now and be saved.  This terrible separation will last through eternity.

Note: “Depart from me” is  the opposite of “Come unto me.”

Have you obeyed the gospel?

5) The greatest surprise will happen.

Matthew 25:

[41] Then he will say to those on his left, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

[44] They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’  [45] He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Matthew 7:

[22] Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

[23] Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

6) The greatest verdict will be given.

Matthew 25:

[46] “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Matthew 25:

[34] Then the King will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.”

This verdict will announce the destiny of all who ever lived.
